Clayton Kershaw Baseball Camp

On Saturday November 10th, Mercy Street and Kershaw's Challenge teamed up to host a baseball camp for little leaguers from West Dallas Little League.  The sixty-two participants were excited to receive instruction from one of baseballs best pitchers Clayton Kershaw, the 2011 National League Cy Young award winner and the 2012 recipient of the Roberto Clemente award.

We were blessed to have thirty-five coaches and players from the Dallas Baptist University Patriots baseball team come out to teach our players the fundamentals of the game.

Stations were set-up to instruct campers in the areas of hitting, fielding, and pitching.  Campers also enjoyed participating in a wiffle ball home run derby.

The camp concluded with Clayton Kershaw sharing about his experience in the big leagues, his gratitude for having been given the platform to share his faith, as well as answering questions from campers.  Clayton also signed autographs for all little leaguers and their families.

Thank you to all who were instrumental in making this years Clayton Kershaw Baseball Camp a huge success!

An Amazing Assembly!

If you have never attended an assembly with Keith Davis and Willie Green you have no idea what you are missing! Keith is a former New York Giant, and Willie is a former player of the Cleveland Browns.

These guys did an exceptional job captivating the audience, young and old alike. No one expected this dynamic duo to teach; preach; share; relate; encourage; challenge; lift/spin people; bend iron and more, all in the span of an hour.  I have never seen anything like it, nor had anyone else for that matter. It was the best assembly I think I have ever seen and the principals and teachers along with all the students agreed!

You just have to see it to believe it. Their message is so powerful, uplifting and positive that our school was still excited and talking about it a week after they had left. I praise God for these young men who go around the country at their own expense spreading the Good News of Jesus and how a relationship with Him impacted their lives, changing the trajectory for eternity.  May they continue to be strengthened in Word and Deed and may their ministry continue to have a profound impact on the Kingdom of God.

West Dallas Pride vs. Mercy Street Staff Annual Softball Game

After a great season, the 17 and under West Dallas Pride girls softball team concluded their season by taking on the Mercy Street staff in their third annual softball game.  The game was played last Friday under the lights at Johnny Oates Field.  Both teams gave it their all but the Mercy Street Staff squeaked out a seven to five victory in the four-inning exhibition game.  After the game, the West Dallas Pride celebrated a tremendous season by enjoying pizza and receiving their season awards.  Mercy Street thanks all who came out to support West Dallas Pride on this special night.

Rangers Partnership

Mercy Street Little League Baseball teams traveled to Arlington to see their favorite team Texas Rangers.  A total of sixty players and coaches got an up and close experience of what it feels like to be a celebrity for the day.

The day started off with us loading up on a Texas Rangers Fan Charter Bus with all the bells and whistles. Then once we arrived at the Ballpark in Arlington, we were met by the Rangers Host and Hostess who escorted us to our seats, which couldn't have been in a better location.  After all that, they treated us to hotdogs!  To top off the night, kids had the chance to express their gratitude for this experience to the hosts & we ended with a sweet time of prayer.

The players, parents and coaches were very thankful for the opportunity to attend the game and our partnership with the Texas Rangers.

David Van Wagenen

Welcome back everyone. I hope we all had a safe and fun holiday break. The New Year is upon us, and we have been fortunate to have good weather thus far. Mercy Street would also like to thank all those who helped make 2011 a huge success.

The sports department has an exciting year ahead, and we are looking for our biggest turnout yet for all of our sports programs. First up is baseball, starting in the beginning of April and running through the middle of June. We handed out registration forms to various schools in the West Dallas community before the holidays in an effort to get the word out early. We think this will help increase the numbers of kids playing baseball and help educate the people living in the community about Mercy Street. There will be tryouts held towards the end of February as well as a draft to follow, prior to the start of the season.

Soccer will be up next starting in early October and lasting through November. There will not be tryouts or a draft. We are hoping for an even bigger turnout for 2012. We believe that last season went smoothly but are always trying to improve. It is important to remember that the main goal is to provide a safe and healthy environment for the kids, while we help spread the message of the Gospel to those living in the West Dallas community and beyond.

We are in the process of making calendars for baseball and intend to have them ready in time to hand out during the tryouts. You can also go to www.quickscores.com/mercystreetdallas anytime to check practice and game schedules, rosters, coach information and general announcements. We will provide updated information on the website once we get closer to the start of the season.

We are excited for great things to happen this year and hope everyone enjoys the cool weather while it lasts. Additional information will be posted as needed, and we wish everyone a happy week and weekend.
